    On that Sunday afternoon, my friend and I sat on the beach chairs and watched our girls playing in the waves. Suddenly, the girls all ran away. About fifty metres from us, the girls stood next to a middle-aged man and watched him fishing. He smiled at them. They ran back to us all except my three-year-old daughter, Anna.

    "Anna! Come here! Play with your friends!" I shouted, realising that my speeches about not talking to strangers weren't working. So I felt a little better when Anna finally ran towards me. Then she took up a shovel(铲子) and looked me in the eye, "I want to be with that man." She ran back, sat down next to him and started digging.

    I watched my daughters, every few seconds looking quickly at my five-year-old daughter to make sure she hadn't been swept out to the sea, then back to Anna to make sure she was safe. A few seconds later, Anna ran back to us, waving something shiny. It was a toy fish—yellow and rubber. This must be what he was using for fishing. And he'd given it to Anna. The three other girls saw it and they all wanted it." My friend gave me that fish!" Anna shouted loudly. The girls ran after each other with a yellow rubber fish flying through the air.

    Suddenly, the man walked towards us with three more rubber fishes. He handed them to each of the girls. "Thank you," they said quickly.

    "Thank you," I said, realising there are lessons for mothers to learn that only three-year-olds could teach them.

    ①Some people like to be scared(受惊吓)! Choosing to be scared can be fun. Dr Margee Kerr, a sociologist, explained the science of fear(恐惧). "Some people like to be scared because they like the way their body changes," she says.

    ②Being scared is not always fun. When a balloon pops, we may jump.

    Our heart beats faster and harder. How does the body have the reactions? "When we meet something startling, our brain and body start making changes to help prepare us for the unknown," Dr. Kerr explains, "These changes are caused by the senses(感官), which always send information to the brain. It gives out chemicals into the bloodstream, and those chemicals act on different parts of the body. At the same time, the brain decides whether or not the danger is real."

    ④However, too much fear can be harmful because experiences can lead to long-lasting fears that may stop a person from trying new things. A long-lasting fear can mean you've had a bad experience, and your brain doesn't want you to have it again.

    ⑤Many people have beat their own fears. Instead of listening to their imagination, they learn the facts about anything that seems scary. Knowledge can help a person feel less afraid. Dr. Kerr grew up on a farm. She was scared of black bears in the woods before. She says, "After I read a lot about them, I knew for sure what to do if I ever met a bear and how to protect myself."

    In your opinion, how should a man dress, behave and talk? There is no single answer. Many girls today love xiaoxianrou, or "little fresh meat", which refers to young male(男性) stars who are delicate(精致的) and cute. Of course, there are also people who still like the traditional male image of being muscular and strong.

    This topic caused some discussion across China in September. It started when CCTV invited four young actors to perform on First Class for the New Term, an educational TV show for primary and middle school students. The four actors all looked feminine(女性化的)and wearing makeup.

    Later on, criticism(批评) of their looks was everywhere on the Internet. Some called the actors "niangpao". Many parents believe that this kind of soft male image is in poor taste and could have a bad influence on their child development.

    "As male stars, they pay too much attention on their looks and fail to set good examples for teenagers,"Xinhua said, "If men all look or do like this, China will never become the strong and great country as it hopes to be", Xinhua added. However, others have some different opinions, they can accept the soft looks of males, they even would like to be like them.

    "No matter what kind of personal style or quality he or she chooses to show, whether it is strong-willed or soft, that doesn't stop them from being an excellent person," China Women's Daily said in a report. People's Daily agreed and said, "Whether the man is strong or not depends on their inner qualities, not their outer looks."

Our Class Rules

    Hello, everybody! I'm Lisa from Darwin International School. Today our class had a discussion about the class rules. Here are our different points.

    Some think we should listen to the teachers very carefully in class and write down the notes because schoolwork is the most important. At school when we are doing our homework, do not  talk—that may disturb(打扰) others. It is necessary to hand in our homework in time every day.

    The mobile phone is not allowed to be taken to our class because it may be bad for our study.

    Some think how to be a polite student is more important. We should pay attention to our manners. For example, when you cough, turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with your hand. Afterward, you should say, "Excuse me." Greet the teachers by saying something like, "Good morning Mrs. Graham!" In the dining hall, we should keep quiet while having lunch. After we eat, we must clean our tables and don't leave any litter. It is also important to answer all questions with a complete sentence.

    Our teacher Mr Jackson also showed his ideas. He said, "No matter what happens, always be honest. Accept that you are going to make mistakes. Learn from them and move on."

    In my opinion, it's a good idea to wear the school uniforms(校服)on weekdays because I will never think about what to wear next day!

    You probably know about Single's Day (Nov.11th) in China, when people stay up very late at night to shop online in order to save money. We usually enjoy(我们自己)during shopping on that day. Well, the US has something similar called Black Friday.

    Black Friday is the Friday after the(第四)Thursday in November. This year will fall on Nov. 29th. It's the start of the holiday shopping season. Most people don't have to go to work that day and they have one day(休息). So people start to(考虑)buying what kind of presents for their families and friends.

    While Single's Day is usually for online shopping, a lot of shopping on Black Friday is like a (战争) at actual shops. Shoppers look for deals they like, such as televisions, computers and(音乐的)instruments. These things have high prices, but on this day, there are only a few available at the very low sale prices. After(比较)the prices of things among the different shops, they decide which to buy in the end.

    Some people are(担心的)that they'll miss the things they want to buy. They will wait in line for hours before (午夜)when stores finally open. People camp out in the cold and rush in as soon as the doors open. Sometimes people get hurt when people go(穿过)the doors.

    But lately a few stores have been starting sales even earlier. Stores do this to hopefully get more shoppers and stay ahead of the competition.

    Hongbao, usually a red envelope(信封) with some money inside, is a kind of traditional gift in China. It is a way to show love, good(wish) or blessings(祈祷). This tradition(start) more than 2, 000 years ago when old people used to give money to their grandchildren for good luck in the coming New Year.

    Now something has changed. People prefer to send virtual(虚拟的) hongbao insteadthe traditional one and it helps people give or receive hongbao more(easy) on the mobile phones. This new form of hongbao has become very popular with the WeChat users.
