    Giraffes live in Africa. They have very long necks. A giraffe can be more than 5 metres tall.

    A giraffe has four long and thin legs. The front legs are longer than the back legs. It can run up to 70 kilometres per hour. A giraffe is famous for its long neck. It can reach the leaves at the top of the trees.

    A giraffe can live 20～25 years in the wild, and often longer at zoos. An adult(成年的) giraffe eats up to 63 kilograms of food each day. A giraffe spends most of a day eating and it gets just a few leaves once. It eats leaves on the tall trees, tall bushes and grass. But its favourite food is the leaves on the acacia trees(金合欢树). Acacia leaves contain a lot of water, so a giraffe can eat for a long time without drinking.

    Jimmy is a very kind young man. He works in a big supermarket. His workmates like him very much. Last month Jimmy caught a bad cold, and he stayed in bed for about two weeks. But after he got well, something happened-he couldn't stop winking(眨眼) . When he stayed at home, he was all right as usual. But if he went out, he couldn't stop his eyes from winking.

    Jimmy went to work the next morning. On the way he met a policeman and winked at him. The policeman felt surprised but said nothing. Then he met an old man and winked at him. The old man thought he must be mad. But still he didn't say a word.

    Real trouble started when he met women. First he met a young lady. He winked at her. The woman's face turned red, and ran away as fast as she could. And then he met an old woman who carried a walking stick. Jimmy winked at her. She looked closely at him. Jimmy winked again.

    Without saying a word, she hit Jimmy on the head with her walking stick. "Take that!" she cried out. "This is a lesson(教训) for you."

Poor Jimmy! How could he explain it? He ran away quickly. From then on, he always wears a pair of dark glasses when he goes out.

    Beijing Opera is also called Peking Opera. It came into being after 1790 when the four famous Anhui opera troupes(戏班) came to Beijing. Its music and singing(唱腔) come from Xipi and Erhuang in Hubei and Anhui. Its costumes(服装) are all fascinating and artistic. It is the highest expression of the Chinese culture. It's full of famous stories, beautiful facial paintings and wonderful gestures(姿势) and fights. This kind of opera is very popular with Chinese.

    There are four main roles in Beijing Opera：Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. Sheng is the leading male role. For example, a Wusheng is a soldier or a fighter. A Xiaosheng is a young man. A Laosheng is an old man. Dan is the leading female role. Jing, mostly male, is the face-painted role and Chou is the comedy actor or the clown.

    Stories in Beijing Opera are very interesting. Some of them are from history books, but most of them are from the literature, especially some famous novels. The people in the story usually have some disagreements. They become angry and unhappy. They are sad and lonely. Sometimes they are nervous and worried. Then they find a way to make peace. The stories usually end with happiness and laughter and people are all happy in the end.

    Amsterdam is the most bicycle-friendly capital in the world. Biking is a fun and an easy way of getting around Amsterdam. Students go to school by bicycle. People ride their bicycles to work. Travellers ride bicycles freely around the city. Even the police work by bicycle. You can see these every day in Amsterdam. There are many roads and traffic signs for bicycles. There are also many places for bicycle parking.

    If you travel in Amsterdam, you don't need to take a bus or a taxi, just ride a bicycle. You can ride the bicycle along the roads and the streets to enjoy the scenery. The city has a lot of bicycle shops to choose from. If you do not want to buy a bicycle, you can go to bicycle rentals（租赁）. They are in almost every part of the city. Going for a ride is enjoyable. It's a good idea to find an experienced guide. Because he would take you to some of the city's most beautiful places. Riding bicycles in Amsterdam is great fun and relaxing；just remember to follow the traffic rules(规则) .

    Maupassant(莫泊桑) was one of the well-known writers of short in the nineteenth century in France. His novels made readers excited and enjoyable.

    During his school days, he decided to become a writer. Then he began to write something. Because of the Franco-Prussian War(普法战争), he had to stop .After the war, he went to Paris to look for a job, where he met some great writers and learned a lot from them.

    Working as a clerk(职员), Maupassant was too busy and he had no time to more material(素材) for his story. And he found it to finish his dream. So he left his office to spend all his time on his interest. At the age of thirty－four, he became quite famous.

    Paul loved baseball more than (排球)or basketball. His favourite baseball team was Yankees. Every day he (练习)playing baseball a lot. At night, he even put the baseball gloves under his pillow and (睡觉)with them. He always dreamed about playing baseball for the Yankees.

    Paul was in the school baseball team and his (教练)loved him a lot. He(相信)Paul would be a baseball player. But one day when he rode to school as (通常的), he had a bad accident(事故). He was too (粗心的)to notice a running car. Paul was hurt (严重地)and couldn't walk. His doctor said he would not have a (机会)of walking again. This made Paul cry (大声地).But after that, he said to his parents, "I will walk again. I will run again. I will play baseball for the Yankees."

    There is a nature park in the southwest of our city. The government built it (protect) the rare animals. The nature (park) has been the (symbolize) of our city.

    Yesterday my friends and I visited it. The workers there asked us not (feed) animals. Many animals are in (dangerous) because people kill them for their meat and fur. Another reason is that people are taking their land and making their water (undirty). The situation becoming very serious.

    I learnt much yesterday. I think people should (set) up more comfortable houses for the animals and help them live  peace. We should do our best to protect them, because protecting them is protecting ourselves.
