Butterflies are common all over the world, but butterflies in hotter countries are usually bigger and more brightly colored than those in cooler countries, and they are more different kinds.

Usually the male(雄性的)butterflies are more brightly colored than the females. The females have bigger and heavier bodies since they carry the eggs. The bright colors of the males help to attract the females, and the duller(较暗淡的)colors of the females make them less likely(可能的)to be caught by enemies before they have laid their eggs.

Some butterflies hare bright pattern colors on the upper surface of their wings that show when flying, but when they rest on a tree or leaves, they close their wings. On the undersides of their wings there are green and brown marks which look like the tree or leaves. They are then difficult to be seen. The best example of this is the Dead Leaf Butterfly. When its wings are closed, it looks exactly like a dead leaf. There are even marks that look like the holes in a dead leaf. When the butterfly is run after by a bird, it closes its wings and seems to have disappeared completely.

Many butterflies have round marks on their wings that look like eyes. The round marks have a useful function(功能). When the butterflies are resting, their wings are closed, and these marks can't be seen. When a bird sees one, and begins to attack it, the butterfly will open its wings. The bird thinks that it sees two eyes staring at it, frightened, and flies away.

(1)、The female butterflies have bigger and heavier bodies than the males because _________ .
A、the females carry the eggs B、the females eat more C、the males are more active D、the males have smaller wings
(2)、The duller colors of the female butterflies _________ .
A、help to fly easily B、help to attract the males C、make them look fearful. D、make them harder to be caught
    (3)、The underlined word "that " in Paragraph 3 refers to _________ .
    A、their wings B、pattern colors C、green leaves D、some butterflies
(4)、When run after by a bird, the Dead Leaf Butterfly _________ .
A、is frightened and flies away at once B、opens its eyes and stares at the bird C、closes its wings and seems to have gone D、opens its wings to frighten the bird away
(5)、The last paragraph mainly tells us _________ .
A、why the butterfly cannot be seen B、how the butterfly opens its wings C、what the round marks look like D、what the function of the round marks is

Is there intelligent(有智力的)life on other planets? For years, scientists said "no." or "we don't know." But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists(存在)somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings(人;生物).

Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. "This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life," say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. "Tools like the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜)have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies, " says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth."

In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes(高倍望远镜)allow scientists to discover smaller planets——the size of Mars or Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.

Have beings from space already visited Earth? "Probably not," says Shostak. "It's a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other."

(1)、Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are _________ .
    A、astronomers B、farmers C、singers D、drivers
(2)、What is the best title for Paragraph 2?
A、The Age and Size of Earth B、Our Galaxy: The Milky Way C、Why Intelligent Life Might Exist D、Earth: The Only Planet with Intelligent Life
(3)、Why was it hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe in the past?
A、There were not any smaller planets. B、There were not any powerful telescopes. C、The Milky Way didn't exist at that time. D、The astronomers were not interested in them.
(4)、Why haven's beings from space visited us yet according to Shostak?
A、They're afraid of us. B、It's a long way away. C、They don't want to see us. D、They don't know how to use radio signals.
(5)、What does the underlined phrase "life forms" in the last paragraph mean?
    A、Messages B、Tools C、Intelligent beings D、Radio signals

Nine years ago when I bought my (one) house, my father, 67 years old, painted my house himself. He worked eight hours a day. He would not allow me (pay) someone to have it done. All he asked was a glass of iced tea, and that I hold a paintbrush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy, for I had a law practice to run, and I could not take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.

Five years ago, my 71-year-old father (spend)five hours putting together a swing set(秋千)for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea, and talk to him. But again, I had laundry to do, and the house to clean.

The morning on Sunday, January 16, 1996, my father telephoned me as (usually), this time he had seemed to have forgotten some things we had discussed the week before. I had to get to church, and I cut the conversation short.

The call came at 4:40 am. That day my father (send)to hospital in Florida, I got on a plane immediately, and I vowed(发誓)that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, and have a nice long talk with him and (real)get to know him.

I arrived in Florida at 1:00 am, but my father had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.

In the years since his (die) I have learnt much about my father, and even more about myself. As a father, he never asked me for anything but my time. Now he has all my attention, every single day.

Libraries give kids a quiet and safe place to read and learn. For over 100 years, libraries have played an important role in Americans' education. But how are these book—filled buildings changing with the times? You may be surprised to find out.

Benjamin Franklin famously founded(创建)America's first lending library in 1731. But the public library system got its biggest development in the American history in the late 1800's. Businessman Andrew Carnegie donated millions of dollars to help build free public libraries across the country. Between 1886 and 1919, Carnegie's donations helped build 1,679 new libraries.

Carnegie believed that libraries could offer the chances to Americans, young and old. He knew that the more libraries there were, the more people would have opportunities to read and use books, speeches and news.

If you can easily find a public library in your community(社区), you'll get more chances. After all, the United States has 9,225 public libraries. Today, libraries keep growing. Seven tenths of the libraries have free Internet. It provides much more information and opportunities to ask for jobs online.

Libraries are also teaching kids about the fun of reading. The new program Read! Build! Play! adds reading into playtime. As kids listen to a book that is being read aloud, they use Legos(乐高积木)to build images(图像)from the story happily. Today's libraries are always looking for creative programs to bring people into the library.

Benjamin Franklin once said, "The doors of wisdom(智慧)are never shut." As long as the doors of public libraries are open, what he said is most certainly correct!

    (1)、What do libraries give us?
(2)、Who helped build free public libraries in the United States in early 1900s?
(3)、How many public libraries are there in the United States?
(4)、What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
