Our village carpenter(木匠), John Hill, came one day and made a dining table for my wife. He made it just the right size to fill the space between the two windows. When I got home that evening, John was drinking a cup of tea and writing out his bill(账单)for his job.

My wife said to me quietly, “That's his ninth cup of tea today.” But she said in a loud voice, “It's a beautiful table, dear, isn't it?” “I'll decide about that when I see the bill,” I said. John laughed and gave me his bill for the work. I read:

One dining table                        10th November, 2011

          Cost of wood                  $17.00

          Paint                         $1.50

          Work, 8 hours($1 an hour)       $8.00

          Total                         $36.50

When I was looking at the bill, John said, “It's been a fine day, hasn't it? Quite sunny.”

“Yes,” I said. “I'm glad it's only the 10th of November.”

“Me, too,” said John, “you wait—it will be a lot colder by the end of the month.”

“Yes, colder—and more expensive! Dining tables will be $20 more expensive on November 30th, won't they, John?”

John looked hard at me for half a minute. Was there a little smile in his two blue eyes? I gave his bill back to him.

“If it's not too much trouble, John,” I said, “please add it up again. You can forget the date…”

I paid him $26.50 and he was happy to get it.

(1)、Why did John talk about the weather when the writer was looking at the bill?

A、Because he didn't want the writer to check the bill carefully. B、Because he wanted to show that he was really polite. C、Because it's a good way to communicate with each other. D、Because he wanted to confirm what the weather was like.
(2)、How much would John ask for if he made a dining table on the last day of December according to his bill?

    A、$26.50 B、$36.50 C、$56.50 D、$57.50

A、he got what he should get for his work B、he got paid a lot more than usual for his work C、he got as much money as he had expected D、he didn't have to add up the costs any more
(4)、Which word can best describe John?

    A、Clever. B、Silly. C、Dishonest. D、Humorous.
(5)、What can we learn about John from the passage?

A、He made a mistake carelessly in the bill. B、He tried to get more money for his work. C、He had written the bill before the writer got home. D、He had talked about the bill with the writer's wife.

Last year in the UK at least 45 people died and 900 more were injured (受伤的) in car accidents where drivers were using their mobile phones.Yet many people continue to use them while driving even though it's dangerous.

Research has shown that it is difficult to concentrate on (专注于) driving and talking at the same time.It can even be more dangerous than driving after drinking too much. A recent study found that when drivers were talking on their mobile phones, their stopping times were 30 percent slower than when they had drunk too much—and nearly 50 percent slower than when they were driving normally. It also found that drivers talking on mobile phones were less able to control their cars than drunk drivers.

And talking isn't even the most serious problem, but texting is. Unbelievably, another recent study reported that 22% of adults admitted (承认) they had sent a text message while driving at least once in the past month. An average (平均的) text message takes 90 seconds to write and send. That means for one and a half minutes a driver is looking at their phone's screen and not at the road. The arrival of new smart phones such as the iPhone will only make things worse as they will allow users to do more things than ever before.

Using a mobile phone while driving puts others' lives at risk. No matter how well we drive,if another driver is not careful,we are put in danger by their actions. Such drivers are selfish, careless and should have their driving licences (驾照) cancelled (撤销).

There is no doubt that mobile phones can be fun and are useful, especially when you're in trouble. But there is no need to use them while driving. Just wait until you stop or you will probably get into trouble of your own.

(1)、The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refers to _______.

    A、phone users B、mobile phones C、drivers D、ears
(2)、According to the passage,if a driver needs 10 seconds to stop when driving normally, they will need _______ seconds to stop when talking on a mobile phone.

    A、12 B、13 C、14 D、15
(3)、According to the passage,in what order do the following activities influence driving?

    Dangerous→More dangerous→Most dangerous

    A、drinking→talking on phone→texting    B、texting→talking on phone→drinking C、talking on phone→drinking→texting    D、drinking→texting→talking on phone
(4)、Why will new types of mobile phones make the driving problem worse?

A、It will take longer to send text messages. B、People will want to talk on their phones more often. C、There will be more things for people to do with their phones. D、People think the new phones are easier and safer to use.
(5)、According to the writer, what should be done to people who use mobile phones when driving?

A、They should be put into prison (监狱).    B、Their cars should be taken away. C、Their phones should be taken from them.  D、They should not be allowed to drive any longer.

Now students' English handwriting gets worse and worse. Their teachers worry about that. Is your English handwriting beautiful? If not, here are four steps that really work!

    Use paper with lines

Using paper with lines can keep you writing straight instead of up or down when you write English words or sentences. Those lines on the paper can help you to write words in the right size. Be sure to fill the lined space completely. And remember that those capital letters are written properly.

    Slow down

If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. For some kids, going a little slowly makes the handwriting clear. If you write too fast, it's hard for you to stop where you should, and even worse, you may make more mistakes.

    Hold your pencil correctly

When you hold your pencil correctly, writing is much easier. Some kids press down really hard when they write. That makes the handwriting not nice. Try to be relaxed and don't hold the pencil so hard. Let your writing appear nice and clean. If you do so, people will guess you are a student with a good habit.

    Draw more pictures

Drawing can improve your handwriting. You need to use the skills to control your pencil better when you are drawing pictures. Even though you have no chance to draw at school, you can practice by yourself at home.

Handwriting is very important. Imagine you are a world-famous movie star or a well-known sports player, what do you do when your fans run up to you? Give them your autographs, of course!

  • 20. 阅读表达:阅读下列短文,根据短文内容回答下列各题.

Nowadays people are making themselves beautiful in Korean ways.

“Thank goodness you have double eyelids(双眼皮). Your parents will save a lot of money.” said a family friend when I was five years old. Double eyelids, which almost all the white people have, are rare among Northeast Asians. Only 25% of South Koreans are born with double eyelids.

I never quite understood how having double eyelids saved my parents money until this summer. When I came back to Seoul, everywhere I noticed cosmetic surgery clinics(整形诊所) and advertisements with South Korean women—tall, thin, with milky skin, long legs, nice big eyes and perfect noses. I found that South Korean beauty meant looking as “white” as possible.

Cosmetic surgery has a kind of magical attraction(吸引) to women — the promise of beauty. Women are often sure that suffering is necessary and worthy in order to be beautiful. This suffering is not for nothing. It is believed that beauty leads to attracting a better-looking partner, which then leads to a better-looking child and a better life.

Appearance is starting to be more important in work places. People with good appearance can have more chances .For example, my 29-year-old brother, who is slim and very tall, gets more job chances than his best friend, who is short and heavy, though both of them came from the same college, had the same good marks in their studies. In fact, many South Koreans believe that physical beauty equals happiness

(1)、How many South Koreans are born with double eyelids?

(2)、When did the writer understand having eyelids saved his parents money?

(3)、Does cosmetic surgery have much attraction to women according to the writer?

(4)、What kind of people can get more job chances?
