    Bill, a thirteen-year-old boy, thought he had grown up to be a man. But his parents told him,“You won't be a real man until you begin to1 helping others.”

    One morning, his parents gave him some money to2 some milk for them. Outside a shop he saw a homeless old man who looked very3 . Bill went to him and asked, “What's wrong with you?”

    The old man answered, “I'm hungry. I haven't had4 food for two days.” At the thought of his parents' words, Bill said to the old man,“ Let's go to the5.”When they got there, Bill asked the waiter to bring out bread and coffee to the old man. The old man finished the meal quickly. After the waiter6 the plate and the cup, the old man said, “Sorry for giving you so much trouble. I'm fine now. I'll7 forget your kindness! You are a very good young man.”

    Bill was8 when he heard this. Just when he wanted to9 for the meal, the waiter came. Bill and the old man learned10 that the food was free because it was the birthday of the boss, and they were the first customers(顾客) that day.

    My 10-year-old Donna said,“Mom,I had a new friend at school today.Can she come over tomorrow?”Donna was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell. 

    “Sure,honey,that sounds great,”I said,thinking back to my own best friend,Lillian.We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights,New York.We met at the age of 10,too.Like my daughter,I was shy,but Lillian drew me out.She was one of the friendliest people in school,with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile.

    In senior high school,Lillian went on a trip to Florida.This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days.“I'll be back soon,”she told me.But three days later,Lillian's sister told me that she had fallen into a river and hadn't come out any more.Soon,my family moved to New Jersey.Whenever I thought of her,tears came into my eyes.

    The next day Donna brought her new friend home.“Hi,Mrs.Loggia,”the little girl said.Her hair was so shiny and black and she shot me a big smile.“My name is Laura.”

    My daughter's new friend was so much like Lillian.I was still puzzled (迷惑) when Laura's mom came to pick her up later that afternoon.I opened the door to let her in.“Judy!” she cried.“It's me,Lillian's sister,from Washington Heights.”Yes,my daughter's friend looked familiar.She was Lillian's niece.

    Mr. Weeks is fifty years old. He's taught maths in a middle school for twenty years. He works and always comes to his office on time. He hopes his students will be honest and he is strict with them. Some of his students have become famous people, but they still remember him and often write to him. Of course the man is proud of them.

    This term he began to teach Grade One. Some of the new students were told about him, but the others didn't know about him. On the first day of school he told the students how to be an honest person. He gave them some examples and said, “I don't like telling a lie.” Before class was over, he told all his students to finish Exercise 8 in Lesson 1.

    The next morning, as soon as he came into the classroom, he asked,“Who's finished Exercise 8?” A few students raised their hands. He shook his head and said, “Open your workbooks and see if there's Exercise 8 in Lesson 1.”

    The students had a look at their workbooks and their faces turned red at once.

    On her way home from school the other day, Yang Xi found people looking at her with strange expressions.The 15-year-old Shandong girl felt embarrassed, but she knew they were looking at her school uniform.

    There were some pictures and words on the back, such as“Dear Yang Xi, I will miss you after graduation.”Her friends did it in class.And Yang wrote something on her friends' uniforms too after class.

    Like Yang, many students now use the school uniform as if it were a piece of white paper and draw on it.They draw pictures of their favorite singers,athletes and cartoon characters and so on.“I think  (1)   (wear) a school uniform with graffiti is a kind of campus fashion,”said Yang.

    ①As a matter of fact, most schools have strict rules that require students not to draw on uniforms. Otherwise, they will be punished (惩罚).They may be told to clean their uniform or more seriously, to buy a new one.

    ②However,it seems that some students are not afraid of the rules and punishment.“I think there are at least 100 students with  (2)   (paint) uniforms in my school.They walk around the campus ‘proudly'.I wonder if they care whether they will be punished at all,”said Li Fei,13 of Fujian.

    Li Yong,14 of Heilongjiang, had his own view.“I have seen cartoon figures such as Naruto(火影忍者) and Doraemon(哆啦 A梦) that students draw on their uniforms.They are really beautiful and creative.I think graffiti can make students become creative,”said Li.“But it's better not to draw on uniforms.”

    Although he doesn't think his school uniform looks good, Li would never draw on it.It's a strict school rule there, after all.I have to follow the rules.”
