This famous ecologist(生态学家) grew up in a city in Arizona, America, but he had a big backyard with lots of trees. He spent his free time climbing trees and catching animals with his brother. They each had their favorite places in the biggest tree and they worked out ways to climb from tree to tree without ever touching the ground. Their family went camping in the summer and they would usually visit zoos and aquariums(水族馆) on their family vacations. His clearest memories as a child all had to do with animals and the outdoors. As he was older, he became interested in animal shows on TV and he would wake up early to watch Wild, Wild World of Animals before the other family woke up.

    One day when we talked about fish, he said, “As an ecologist, Mr. White, you should know that fish in most parts of the world have a hard life, such as the Mekong giant catfish, the Chinese paddlefish, taimen, and the Murray cod. They are all in danger and have to do with all kinds of challenges all by themselves. Water pollution is one of them. So these fish really need our help."

Today there are policemen everywhere, but in 1700, London had no policemen at all. A few old men used to protect the city streets at night and they were not paid.

About 300 years ago, London was starting to get bigger and more and more people began to live there. The city was very dirty and many people were poor. There were so many thieves who stole money in the streets that people stayed in their homes as much as possible.

    In 1750, Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like policemen and were called “Bow Street Runners” because they worked near Bow Street.

    Fifty years later, there were 120“Bow Street Runners”, but London had become very big and needed more policemen. So in 1829, the first Metropolitan(or London) Police Force was started with 3, 000 officers. Most of the men worked on foot, but a few rode horses. Until 1920 all the police in London were men.

     Today, London police are quite well paid and for the few police officers who still ride horses, the pay is even better than for the others.

Scientists interviewed hundreds of shoppers at shopping centers, and they asked them to keep diaries of their shopping trips. The people who were unhappy on their way into a shop, they all became happy after the shopping. This is called “retail therapy”.

     Shopping is good for your health. Walking between shops and carrying heavy shopping bags burns 385 calories(卡路里) a week for a British woman, according to a study. The study tested 10 shoppers—five men and five women. It found that women cover an average of nearly three miles during the 2.5 hours they spend walking in me shopping centers every week. But men spend just 50 minutes shopping and cover just 1.5 miles.

    Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest leaders in the world. He was born in Transkei, South Africa July 18^th, 1918. bad news! He died on December 5^th, 2013. He died at the age of 95. Nelson Mandela was an important person all over the world.

    When Nelson Mandela was young, he went to school and studied at school. In the 1950s, almost all black people didn't go to school. Only a few black people had rights (go) to school. Nelson Mandela was (luck). He went to school and finished his schoolwork (successful). After (graduate) he became a lawyer.

    Nelson Mandela (elect) President in 1994. He became his country's (one) black president after spending 27 years in prison. He loved his country and served it with all his heart. He tried to bring people of different (race) together. He once won about one hundred prizes. The most important prize was Nobel Peace Prize. He won the prize in 1993.
